What is Poverty?

Poverty describes a condition in which someone has very little or no money. The government describes poverty today as a yearly income of $22,314 supporting a family of four, and $11,139 for an individual.

America's History with Poverty

  • It's been estimated that over 50% of Americans lived in poverty in 1900.
  • Due to the Great Depression, approximately 1 out of 4 Americans were unemployed by 1932.

Roosevelt's New Deal Offered Hope

  • Launched in 1933, it created the modern American welfare state.
  • It had programs to assist the unemployed, homeless, and poor.
  • The economy boomed into 1940, reaching the level it had been before the stock market crash of 1929.
  • By 1950, the poverty rate lowered to 20% of Americans.
  • President Johnson declared war on poverty in 1964. In the next 11 years, spending on means-tested assistance (housing, food, and medical) and AFDC rose 400%.

Poverty Today

  • While the poverty rate had begun to level out over a few decades, it hit a downturn with the economic decline of recent years.
  • The poverty rate in 2010 was 15.1%, which is the highest it has been since 1993. Almost 50 million people live in poverty in America.

Prejudice Against the Poor

A lot of the prejudice against poor people can be credited to the media They associate poverty-stricken people with:

  • Bad hygiene
  • Diseases
  • Only able to work hard manual labor
  • Lack of education

The handicapped, the ill, and women (especially pregnant women) that are needy experience a great deal of prejudice from more well-off people as well.

How many of you have seen someone irritated at checkout by someone using food stamps? [Get over it and wait. What if that was you?] This is what I want to say when I see someone growing very rude over something like this.

  • Many Americans blame the poor their own poverty! They believe that, if people were not on welfare, they would go find work, and the unemployed could find a job if they really looked. FYI, welfare has an employment requirement.

Being Poor Does Not Have to be a Cycle

Many of you have heard of the poverty cycle. Your grandparents were poor, your parents were poor, so you are destined to be poor too. Here are some great American figures that prove this does not always have to be true:

Benjamin Franklin - Inventor

Walt Disney - Entrepreneur

Elvis Presley - Famous Singer / Actor

Amos Bronson Alcott - Innovative Educator

Booker T. Washington - Educator; founded the National Negro Business League

Billy Sunday - Played for Chicago White Sox / famous evangelist

Jackie Robinson - First African American inducted into Baseball Hall of Fame

What can we do?

Speak out on poverty. If you look on the web, it is not given as much attention as other economic issues. No one likes to talk about poverty... except for the politicians who don't seem to be doing what it takes.

Educate yourself and others about poverty. Donate. Most of us are average Americans barely making it on our income. If you can't donate, time is free. Volunteer it to help at charities. Do your part so the poverty rate does not continue to climb.

Consider this...

50 million people in poverty and yet...

  • gas prices continue to soar
  • power companies make bank during summer months
  • inflation on food and other goods continue
  • people are losing their homes
  • credit card rates increase to maximum

How are Americans supposed to dig themselves out of this hole with all this working against them?

You our only barely touching the truth in this article. Discrimination has become one of the biggest reasons for poverty and once you our poor you have achieved that category. Endless hoops in order to seek help and people still judge you for doing nothing. Fathers serving time in prison for not being able to pay child support and then being told they can not have a job because they have a criminal record, bad credit report or a period of time they were not working. It is a system that separates, discriminates and eventually forces you into compliance with poverty.

Thanks, Ripplemaker!

SanXuary-

I agree that I cannot write enough about the levels of injustice that people in poverty experience. It is an unfortunate cycle that is tough to overcome if people cannot learn tolerance. Great comment, thanks!

Informative and most needed hub - I hope you win the contest.

It is easier to ignore the problem of poverty than to face it and talk about it; without a doubt it is a shame the problem exists in the first place in the richest country in the world

Hey HM

Great article, far too many of us are just a paycheck away from poverty ourselves. Politicians are in the pocket of big business and the wealthy while much of the population votes against their own interest. Tea Party conservatives like to follow the philosophy of atheist Ayn Rand instead of Christ. I wonder how long it will take for us to take control back from the powers that put us in this mess.

Voted up and a new follower!

Hi hmbrandon - very well thought out hub and a much needed kick in the pants for both US and UK readers. Here in the UK we too have many prejudices and preconceived ideas about why people are poor.

Sometimes those ideas are right ... lazy people who prefer to live on State handouts do exist. But the majority of poor people are there through no fault of their own ... just bad luck or bad health or some such. It is time for compassion and understanding, donating and volunteering ...

Well done on your Hubnuggets nomination ... and a warm welcome to HubPages.

Thank you. Myself, I have gone from a comfortable middle class lifestyle to dire poverty after my divorce. It's interesting to see other people's reactions to me, even my own family. When I was middle class, I was welcome in their homes. When my life hit bottom they talked about me instead of to me, they blamed me for my own plight. I am a college educated woman who has a very good resue and work experience, yet in this economy, my age is working against me.

I told my brother not to be so smug. You have NO idea what is coming at you tomorrow let alone a year or two from now. You may be comfortable and doing fine, but there is no security. Anything can happen that will turn your life upside down and you can end up another count in the poverty statistcs. Divorce, disabling car wreck, serious illness, weather disaster. Any of these things can change your life in an instant.

Ive been the recipient of the dirty looks when I pull out my food card at the grocery store. I hope and pray and none of the people who judge me ever have to be in this position. It is demeaning and humiliating.

Every day I wake up on the wrong side of capitalism now.
